Under The Midnight Sun

Back in the Day in Alaska

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 7, 2016

You know you are on vacation with your best friends when you spend two weeks bickering and it’s still the best vacation or your life. This would be two weeks in Alaska celebrating the summer solstice at the Arctic circle. As we sweated through a California summer solstice earlier in the week I was taken …

Don’t go to Mexico!

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 4, 2016

Everyone warned us “Don’t go to Mexico!” Friends and family could barely contain their hysteria. “The gangs! The drugs!” They screamed, clutching their chests in paranoia! “The beaches! The margaritas!” I answered them as I packed my bags. It had been seven years since I had crossed the border at San Ysidro. The running joke, …

By Amber Woods on Saturday, July 2, 2016

I voyaged to my home town this morning to deliver some Sriracha Turkey Meatballs to my parents. My dad had rotator cuff surgery two days ago, so that completely explains why went I went over to my parents house this week he was raking the driveway with his good arm. My boyfriend thinks that I’m …

To be Young and Free and Female and Campimg…

By Amber Woods on Friday, July 1, 2016

There was a rustling outside my tent. It was ungodly dark outside. If I was not completely blind without my bottlecap glasses then all I would be able to see would be stars in the black night sky outside of my tent. I heard a rustling in the underbrush and I did kind of wonder …

Eucalyptus. Poison Oak. Oysters. Not a Recipe.

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, June 29, 2016

This morning I thought it would be fun to recreate a family vacation where I feared for my life. Considering the way I remember dad driving when I was a kid it’s surprising I didn’t feel that way more often but it took the shear drop off cliffs on the way to Big Sur on …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
