The Sport of Kings, At Last

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 17, 2016

This moment captured it best; the moment in time when I stood out at my job. As these two fine young gentlemen in seersucker suits cheered home another winner a giant smile was plastered on my face. Because I love my job. I worked for a company that beat me down for fifteen years. I …

I Miss the Streets of Venice

By Amber Woods on Friday, July 15, 2016

I miss the streets of Paris and roaming the narrow alleyways of Venice. I feel so blessed for the days in my twenties when I was able to sneak into a café in Italy and try a cappuccino and a zeppole filled with marsala cream. I can still remember how sweet the donut like pastry …

That Time I almost Killed the UPS Guy

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, July 13, 2016

So funny story, I’ve almost killed the UPS guy a few times now. Although he only would have actually died if he happened to be allergic to happy dog slober. (Which I don’t think a ton of people are, although it is beyond disgusting.) Our neighbor across the street here in Big Bear Lake is …

Mango Curried Chicken Salad

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 11, 2016

Summer days were meant to relax at the lake, fishing pole in hand or watch July thunder storms on lazy afternoons from the front porch. I am so thrilled to say that this has been my summer so far. This morning I woke up at dawn and hauled my mountain bike down Van Dusen Canyon …

Big Bear, A Simpler Way of Life; and We Love it That Way!

By Amber Woods on Saturday, July 9, 2016

Every morning our dogs go bat shit crazy when they see the beautiful Huskies. Our neighbors have three absolutely out of this world beautiful Huskies and they are easily three times the size of our big dog. I’m pretty sure our dogs hate them because the Huskies are so beautiful and they are two mutts. …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
