Curry Bum

Beef Samosas in Puff Pastry

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 5, 2015

This whole mountain is in a panic. It is fucking pandemonium out there! A coworker called to remind me that “We are getting a huge snow storm tonight!!!” I seriously wanted to laugh in her face. Excuse me? A huge snow storm? In March 1991 we got three feet of snow in ten days. Old …

My coworker told me she ran two miles with a jogger       She was bragging about what a great full body workout it was!       I told her I was going to do the same thing with my cat!       She laughed       I …

What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas… Bacon Edition

By Amber Woods on Saturday, February 28, 2015

What is the most magically delicious food after a night of drinking? Well that would be bacon of course! What is the most horrible noise a hung over friend does not want to hear at ten a.m. in Vegas? A fire alarm shrieking and screaming…for fifteen minutes… And her seven none hung over friends laughing …

My friends and I were on the last leg of a very long drive back from Las Vegas.        The drive back from Las Vegas is always long but when you are in a hurry to be at home and see your boyfriend after three days out of state the drive takes …

Cheesey Corn Chowder with Poblanos

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, February 25, 2015

I miss snow days. It’s mid February and it feels like a late March spring day in this mountain town. Except for one major difference. There is no snow run off this year. The creeks, lakes and ponds of Running Springs are bone dry and it breaks my heart. Friends in the North West speak …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
