Donald Trump Jalapeño Poppers

By Amber Woods on Monday, October 24, 2016

I simply adore my small town Big Bear life living, working and just being in this alpine forest above six thousand feet. If it’s a Thursday you can find me meeting a friend and our mutts at the dog park by the lake for a morning of ball chasing and frolicking in the grass. ( …

Breakfast Tacos with Chorizo, Spicy Cheddar, Feta and Egg

By Amber Woods on Saturday, October 22, 2016

When camping in the high sierras breakfast tacos are a must in the morning. They are especially needed after the bears ransack your campground the night before!     Day three of camping in the high Sierras we woke up to discover the bears had feasted the night before.     I had told my friends specifically, yes …

Where The Hell is Twin Lakes?

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 20, 2016

I’ve always heard that Twin Lakes near Bridgeport was a fishing mecca and so gorgeous. I finally found my way to Twin Lakes today past ranch after ranch of grazing cattle and down a winding country road that seemed to be taking me to the middle of nowhere. On my drive to Bridgeport up Highway 395 …

Fig Ginger Chutney

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 16, 2016

I’m obviously tired this morning. I wandered into the kitchen before dawn. I placed all my smoothie ingredients in a plastic cup and then stared at the red cup in confusion, like why are you not a smoothie yet? This is what happens when you get up before dawn to start your vacation. There is …

And Than Carly Tried to Murder a Husky

By Amber Woods on Friday, October 14, 2016

I’ve been hiking these Sierra trails all week. Little Carly dog and I have hiked over fifty miles in seven days so far. Carly has been unbelievably well-behaved. Not only has she been well-behaved but she’s eaten her food every afternoon like a champion not just flipping the bowl over like a toddler and glaring …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
