Mary’s Gingerita Sorbet

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Every one needs a friend like Mary. This is not poison oak. Probably     I thought that I was the nature guide.     Than I met Mary.     And she showed me what poison oak really looks like.     Well, that explains why I get poison oak so often.    To be fair there …

15 Reasons why I Run

By Amber Woods on Thursday, May 12, 2016

Nothing makes me more happy than a day powering up trails, running through creeks and climbing up boulders. This week has been an amazing week of spring time showers and even some showy blizzards. Why do I run? There are so many  great reasons! I run because I love to get caught in terrible snow …

When the wind is blasting our house with snow and there is a fire blazing in the fireplace the pine and eucalyptus wood filling the house with an amazing smell I can almost forget that it’s springtime. i know, I know, most people embrace spring time, the green plants, the wild flowers and the warmer …

The Things We Take for Granted

By Amber Woods on Thursday, May 5, 2016

A year ago I was slowly trudging my way up trails, pins and needles constantly shooting up my right leg. That is when I could feel my right leg which was sometimes, on the good days. I usually had a scowl on my face as I ached to run again, my feet flying …

Jalapeño Cheesy Eggs with Pistachio Oil fried Spinach & Avacodo

By Amber Woods on Sunday, May 1, 2016

After a weekend of debauchery Monday morning means a butt busting workout followed by a fresh homemade juice and this healthy Baja inspired breakfast. This spicy breakfast makes me yearn for the beaches of Baja and days spent exploring the countryside near Ensenada. For hours, and hours and hours. Because the toll road is closed …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
