Fork Yeah

Tropical Ahi Poke

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, August 17, 2016

I’ve got this one last summer day to enjoy the comforts of home before I become a dirty camper again. One last day of having a full kitchen, the use of my nutri bullet, Fox News blaring in the back ground and having the luxury of being able to take a hot shower whenever I want. …

My Fish Skills

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, August 16, 2016

If there is one random skill I possess I am an expert at getting a hook out of a fish mouth. It’s a great skill when you are a catch and release fisherman. Which was what we were last week as we caught the most gorgeous wild trout the eastern sierras could hold. I have …

Mt Whitney’s Revenge

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 14, 2016

“Ninety two switch backs on Mt Whitney, ninety-two switchbacks! You hike up one, you’re calves ache, ninety-one switch backs on Mt Whitney” Two years ago was my first ascent of Mt Whitney, my first hike over 12,000 feet and my first over twenty miler. As I raced up the ninety-nine switchbacks of Mt Whitney, practically …

The Story of Us ( Fish Edition)

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, August 9, 2016

My boyfriend and I have this tradition where every two years we have a great day of fishing. It all started on our first date ( two years ago) when I pulled the most massive trout he had ever seen out of Big Bear Lake. He knew right then that I was a keeper ( …

The Majestic Marmot; That Cuddly Bastard!

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 5, 2016

As soon as we realized the keys were missing I knew it was those damn marmots. It had to be those cute marmots who I just couldn’t get enough of. I had literally spent the last hour wandering our camp site and instead of singing “Here kitty, kitty” I was shaking a bag of organic sprouted …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
