A Peaceful Snow Play Experience in Big Bear Lake California

By Amber Woods on Friday, January 21, 2022

I grew up in a mountain forest building snow forts and eight-foot-tall snowmen. When I was a kid, well no, we didn’t walk to school six miles uphill both ways but we often trudge through two feet of snow in hand-me-down snow pants to get to the local bus stop. Snow play in Big Bear …

Impossibly Good Not Impossible Black Bean Burgers

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, January 18, 2022

I’m a little terrified of beans as my body hates them but I also do love black beans. Beans are so heart-healthy and high in fiber. They are not a food group I enjoy running from in terror, yet I usually do. But I can’t resist these black bean burgers. As more people are trying …

Christmas Pajama Party 2021

By Amber Woods on Saturday, January 15, 2022

As soon as I saw the dirty reindeer costume I knew I had to have it. I also knew that it being an extra-large my boyfriend would fit perfectly into it on Christmas morning. I grabbed the, not exactly mint condition garb off of the rack at the thrift store and shoved the gently used …

Hawaiian Chicken with Gochujang Coleslaw

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, January 12, 2022

I used to be a trail runner. I used to run fifteen miles before work in the daytime hours, go to my night shift job and then bust my ass making a living until the sun started to rise. I used to go on hiking vacations to the Eastern Sierra’s where “On vacation” I would …

Keto Lasagna Stuffed Bell Peppers with Goat Cheese

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, January 12, 2022

Living a keto lifestyle means I stuff a lot of things into low-calorie bell peppers. Want to have enchiladas? Stuff all those enchilada toppings (Minus the tortillas) in a high in Vitamin A and C yellow bell pepper! Got a hankering for chili relleno casserole? Dice up some rotisserie chicken, canned Ortega chilis, and all …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
