El Nido; A Culinary adventure in Baja

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 17, 2014

You wouldn’t expect to go to the best steakhouse of your life and a fantastic culinary good time while traveling in Baja California. I would expect fantastic margaritas, lobster and delicious fish tacos but rabbit, quail and the most amazing venison I’ve ever had came as a surprise. Yes, here in Baja California …

That One Time I Played with a Lion

By Amber Woods on Sunday, December 14, 2014

“Ok”.        They are going to throw a lion at me.       I’m going to take a few pictures and we are out of there!”         I probably have that crazy chipmunk look in my eyes again as I shout these words toward my boyfriend, …

Well, That’s Just Mexico

By Amber Woods on Thursday, December 11, 2014

“How was Mexico?” My friends have been asking.       It was like a video game.       If you are not dodging stray dogs and people running stop signs than you are trying to decide if the speed limit is 40 k or 80 k or 60 k, in …

Donkeys, Beaches and Getting Lost in Mexico for a Day

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 10, 2014

I’m sitting by a pool over looking the ocean in Baja California on Thanksgiving weekend. The pool is deserted as is this entire massive, expansive resort similar to one of these mexico villa rentals. It just blows me away that I feel like my boyfriend and I are the only guests in this whole place. …

Don’t be Afraid to Get Lost in Mexico

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Let me tell you a thing about California and Mexico.      There are two types of Californians; The type who go out of their way to absolutely not buy Mexican produce; they would not buy a cucumber gown in Mexico if it was the last Persian cuc on earth! Than there are …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
