Caramel Cinnamon Apples

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 24, 2020

Autumn days in the eastern Sierra mountains mean ruby red leaves falling out of aspen trees onto dusty trails. The weather gets cooler and so pleasant to hike in. I mean until that old high elevation wind picks up at above six thousand feet. The weather can go from pleasant to blustery real fast, especially …

Social Distance some Outdoor fun in the eastern Sierras during a Pandemic

By Amber Woods on Sunday, September 20, 2020

It’s summertime 2020 and the eastern Sierra mountains are calling my name. My unbridled wanderlust is getting to me as this pandemic rages through the hot summertime months. If you are anything like me and my family you have been self quarantined since March 6th. You have become accustomed to wearing a mask every place …

2020 is such a ridiculous time to be living in and as we sit here, stuck in the smoky southland this fall, choking on gritty air from wildfires burning all over California, I do feel blessed that we were able to travel to India, to Goa and Kerala in the last few years. Last New …

Where the Wildfire Fleeing Women Were

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, September 16, 2020

Southern California has been besieged with explosive wildfires this week. I remember once upon a time here in the southland when a 10,000-acre wildfire was the largest this sunshine state had ever seen. Now here we are in pandemic plagued 2020, sometimes it feels like the end of days especially if you are the one …

Surviving Wild Fire Season 2020

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 10, 2020

It’s wildfire season, again, here in southern California. On the chilly east coast, y’all may refer to the first week of September as fall as you pull on your comfy sheepskin Ugg boots and order a pumpkin spice frappalatte from the local Starbucks. Here in California, in the valleys down below my mountain home, Californians …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
