Surviving The River, One Bloody Gash at a Time

By Amber Woods on Thursday, June 19, 2014

I knew I was going to hate the river.    I don’t like the heat.    I don’t like bros.    And I’m not an alcoholic so it would seem that a day at the river might be stretching a fun experience for me.    You know what, a day at the river on a Thursday in June was …

Veggie Sandwich with Peppadew Hummus, Sprouts, SunflowerSeeds and Feta

By Amber Woods on Monday, June 16, 2014

Today was productive. Awake at dawn I ran over ten miles in the manzanita filled forest. The air smelled of pine cones and umm… bugs.   Yeah the bugs were out something fierce today. My run would have been fantastic if it were not for the bees, flies and nates buzzing loud in my ear, …

Marinated Beet Salad with Cashews and Pistachio Oil

By Amber Woods on Friday, June 13, 2014

I guess I should thank god for Dumb Dumbs or I would really have nothing to blog about.      I have a new test if a boy is smart enough to date me.       I don’t mean city smart.       I mean mountain smart.      It used to be a …

I’ve Got G.A.S (Gear Accumulation Syndrome)

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, June 10, 2014

It’s hard to be a fan of the outdoors and not slowly turn into a outdoor merchandise hoarder.     It starts with a pair of running shoes, the Asic women’s size 7’s in white and pink.     Than your first pair of trekking poles.     And of course you need a -10 degree sleeping bag to …

Falling off Toilets; Life with Vertigo

By Amber Woods on Sunday, June 8, 2014

I feel like Lucille Austero from Arrested Development.    Vertigo is so fucking weird.    Its hard to explain to some one who has never had it.    At first its fun.    The room spins a little and honestly you feel a little drunk, weee!    Than three hours later you are puking none stop, you fall off the toilet …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
