Sweet Potato Patty Tacos with Yogurt Tahini Sauce

By Amber Woods on Sunday, June 8, 2014

There are so many awesome places in Southern California to swim, fish and hike.       Lake Perris is not one of them.       To get to Lake Perris you drove through a place called the Badlands.       Seriously, is this a fucking Stephen King movie?     …

BBQed Eggplant Tacos with Greek Yogurt Tahini Sauce

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, June 4, 2014

Every time I almost swallow a bug I remember that it’s spring time.       Every time I leave the house at seven a.m. for a five mile run in the hot, hot May sun I almost always forget my mosquito net for my face. I than spend most of my sweaty, …

Balsamic Dried Peaches and Strawberries

By Amber Woods on Friday, May 30, 2014

My dad is famous for bringing home “treasures” he finds on the sides of the interstate.        He works as a long haul trucker and this affords him the chance to pick up peaches fresh from Georgia in the spring and New Mexico Hatch Chilies whenever he drives through the …

Coconut Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Chunks

By Amber Woods on Thursday, May 29, 2014

A good friend offers to check your ass for leeches before you even ask.      A better friend would probably warn her nature sensitive friends before they go crashing down the natural granite water slide into the chilly creek waters blow that yes there are leeches here and yes you may be picking them …

Lamb Stew with Red Wine, Barley and Peas

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 27, 2014

I was doing my morning run at Holcomb Valley this morning when I crossed paths with a pair of gorgeous coyotes.     Their red coats shined auburn against the white snow as they trotted up the road and across into the brush near me.    I whipped out my camera as fast as I …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
