The Mountains are Calling

Let it Snow

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 23, 2015

After three Bloody Mary’s it’s not abnormal for this to happen.  Yes that is my little kitty cat and yes we are playing in the snow.  This is what happens when we have a dinner party on a snowy night in Big Bear. Yes, this is life in a resort town; kitties on ice.  I …

Chimchurri Rice with Pickled Vegetables

By Amber Woods on Monday, December 21, 2015

“Maam I would appreciate it if you would put your pants back on” Okay maybe that is not exactly what the cop said to me but it could have been. When you find yourself stuck behind a terrible accident on an winding mountain road the polite thing to do is take off your pants. To …

Baby it’s Cold Outside

By Amber Woods on Friday, December 18, 2015

I’m walking through a snowy empty forest. The pines are covered in fresh snow. My little doggy has been whimpering ever since we started off roading up this mud and snow in rusted dirt road. She is so super excited for a morning gallivant through the fresh snow fall. She just can’t control emotions on …

Easy Cauliflower Rice Curry

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 16, 2015

I don’t even know how to express in words how terrible of a place San Bernardino is. You would think in a place like this after the terrorist attack that happened last Wednesday morning that the community would be coming together in unity and peace. Wouldn’t you expect peace? As I sat at the windshield …

The C Word

By Amber Woods on Monday, December 14, 2015

Our second day of our lovely beach vacation we went to the C word for lunch. If you ever find yourself hungry on the Central Coast you must visit the C word. Of course I’m sure locals don’t call it that. I’m sure locals can pronounce places like Paso Robles and Cayucos and Avila Beach …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
