Greek Yogurt with Date Tamarind Chutney

By Amber Woods on Monday, May 11, 2015

“Trekking poles are for walking and not fetching!” Just one of the things I may or may not have hollered at Carly on our nature walk this morning. I may be disabled and mostly out of commission as far as the working out goes but that doesn’t mean Carly gets to be a couch potato.  If …

Wild Rice Salad with Goat Cheese and Walnuts

By Amber Woods on Friday, May 8, 2015

I don’t usually pay attention to fashion. I buy what I like and half the time it’s yoga pants. When I was in Australia a few months ago I found an amazing blue sundress in a little boutique and I just had to have it. It was a glorious eighty degree day in Cairns Australia. …

Buffalo Style Turkey Jerky with Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dip

By Amber Woods on Thursday, May 7, 2015

“Who wants to go camping in Bakersfield?!” I must have really amazing and devoted friends.  I was planning this camping trip around our farm tour  in Kingsburg up north.  Camping in Cow Town, ahem, I mean Bakersfield, was one of the few options and yet I still I had all kinds of friends who were interested in going! So …

Carrot Coconut Date Protein Bars

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 5, 2015

It felt like a normal run of the mill Thursday. So I decided to take Carly for a walk. In a blizzard. Five miles down a deserted dirt road I had never explored before. Obviously Mary would join me on this adventure with her adorable Lhasa Apso who hates the snow, Charlie. Charlie has no idea her …

Fennel, Goat Cheese and Pesto Puff Pastry Pizza

I love, love, love my new Merrell Salada boots! These hiking boots are completely comfortable! To be fair, the longest hike I have done in them is a fifteen miler to this point (and in deep snow at that) but they made my feet happy the whole time. I wore them last week hiking up …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
