Butternut Squash Pasta Carbanara

By Amber Woods on Thursday, June 25, 2015

We were off roading in the absolute middle of no where when my car made the noise. Ping ping ping. What. The. Hell. Was that? I had once, I believe, heard that noise before long ago but I had no idea why my Subaru was making it now, in the middle of nowhere on an …

The Sweatiest Little Mermaid & A Recipe For Date Coconut Ice Cream

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, June 23, 2015

A few months ago I couldn’t even swim. I was like a fish out of water although I was always in that H20.  I was like a fish that could not swim and instead would just wear floaties on her arms or inner tubes around her middle and float down the river. I sucked at being …

All we have left are the Memories

By Amber Woods on Saturday, June 20, 2015

I feel like I need to apologize to friends and family these days; sorry if my FB posts are clogging up your feed but this fire is consuming my life, invading my thoughts. If I’m not feeling miserable about the trees and the trails and the fact that half of the ruggedly beautiful San Gorgonio Wilderness …

Like Sleeping in a War Zone

By Amber Woods on Saturday, June 20, 2015

All night long as we tried to sleep we heard helicopters flying low over our house in the pine filled forest. The choppers were picking up water from nearby Big Bear Lake and fire retardant from the airport near our house to drop on the Lake Fire. The constant drone of the helicopters reminded us …

Wild Fires; You Never Really Get Used to This

By Amber Woods on Friday, June 19, 2015

In this town when you see the flashing red lights of the forest service in your rear view mirror that’s when you start to worry. Good thing I drive an all wheel drive SUV. I yanked my Subaru into what may have qualified as a dirt turnout; all kinds of dogs yelping and flying over each …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
