Vegan Apricot Honeyed Cinnamon Smoothie

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, June 16, 2015

Today I watched Carly do the stupidest thing I have ever seen her do. And I have seen that dog do a lot of stupid things. She jumped out of a mostly closed car window while I was driving thirty miles an hour because she saw a squirrel. Nope, she did not catch the squirrel. …

This Whole Mountain is a Crime Scene; a Flash Back to the Dorner days

By Amber Woods on Monday, June 15, 2015

Once upon a time my little home town was put on the map by the national news and it was not for a good thing. In 2013 we had a crazy and cold blooded cop killer on the loose in Southern California. In the few weeks that Chris Dorner was on the run he eventually …

The Mt Whitney Trail; 14,505 Feet of Beauty and Extreme Indurance

By Amber Woods on Sunday, June 14, 2015

14,505 feet. I never imagined that I would ever stand atop a mountain top that high. I never in my life could imagine how spectacular the views of Sequoia National Park could be from that elevation. I never knew how physically tough ninety nine switchbacks could be as my legs powered through them. I never …

Brussels Sprouts with Cranberry Cashew Pesto

By Amber Woods on Friday, June 12, 2015

Today I sat in my small town library and tried to work on my blog in relative silence.        Libraries are supposed to be a quiet place to get work done and concentrate, right?         Some one needs to tell meth mouth sitting next to me this.  …

Cilantro Cesar Salad with Avocado and Corn (Even Better than Café Rio or El Torrito!)

By Amber Woods on Thursday, June 11, 2015

If there was lesson to be learned from today’s adventure in the forest it was always get a wilderness pass even if you’re taking a familiar trail and you think that you know the wilderness well. This morning’s plan with the pups was to do a simple loop of Lost Creek Trail. It should have …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
