Rattle Snake Ice Cream or Coffee and Coconut Shakes

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 30, 2015

You know how Kim Carnes sang about she’s got Betty Davis eyes? Well last night while watching the heart radio CMA show we realized that Tippy has Garth Brooks eyes. Which means he has creepy eyes. I’m trying to explain to Tippy proper rattlesnake etiquette  in this picture while he checks me out with those crazy eyes. …

Hail Yeah! Best Pizza in Alaska!

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 26, 2015

Once upon a time I sat outside in a hail storm, stuffing the most incredible pizza in the world in my mouth hole. The hail was coming down so hard I actually had bruises from it. Did we give up on the pizza and run inside like all the locals? No. We stayed outside as …

I’ll Miss that Drowling Monster

By Amber Woods on Friday, July 24, 2015

I feel so blessed for this summer in the Big Bear Valley. I’ve always been a Running Springs girl and I loved my small town but I am completely spoiled now by the beauty and tranquility of Big Bear Lake. This morning was Tippy’s last morning to hike with us before he returns to Nor. …

Indian Style Grilled Eggplant Slices

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, July 21, 2015

It was eighty five degrees as we slowly, grudgingly hiked out of the canyon. My foot ached as I slowly put one foot in front of the other and tried to concentrate on not puking. I was chugging water even though I was not thirsty in the least bit, as I lurched uphill slowly. I …

That One Time I Had Fun in Hemet

By Amber Woods on Saturday, July 18, 2015

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the massive ranch house was Seattle Slew’s blankly. Yes, I mean Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. Draped over a couch ( what kind of couch? I have no idea; I was mesmerized by the most price list piece of thoroughbred horse racing history I have ever …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
