Jalapeño Popper Stuffed Chicken with a BBQ Glaze

By Amber Woods on Friday, May 22, 2020

Earlier in the week I had to take a break from gluten-free baking and roasting jalapenos to put on a fashion show for the kitty cats. Yes, this might just be day fifty of quarantine and have I lost it? Have I been locked inside our home mostly and our remote mountain community away from …

Before We Were Six Feet Apart

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 19, 2020

It was early February 2020 a chilly winter morning. I got up in the dark before the sunrise to go for a walk on the beach before work. Of course February Amber was not counting on her plantar fasciitis killing her once she put her toes in the sand. So instead of dipping my …

Eggs Benedict Breakfast Salad with Gluten-Free Salmon Cakes

By Amber Woods on Sunday, May 17, 2020

I don’t usually add pork rinds to a healthy salmon recipe but I don’t usually hike two thousand feet up to the top of a mountain with ten-foot snowdrifts without snowshoes either. So I guess there is a first time for everything. As in hiking until your cankles bleed because you decided to hike to …

My Favorite Thrift Store Quarantine Finds

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 12, 2020

Day sixty of this quarantined life and like so many people around the world I am so ready to get the hell out of my home and back to work. Before COVID-19 invaded our world like a deadly germy parasite, we used to dream of taking trips abroad and weeks away from work.  We saved …

Keto Low Carb Bacon and Thyme BBQ Sauce

By Amber Woods on Friday, May 8, 2020

The first time I rode on a motorbike it was in tropical Goa India. And yes, I was almost forty years old. And yes, riding a motorbike behind my love on an Indian dirt road with no helmet was more than a little bit terrifying. Thank God we rode straight to Paradise Beach and then …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
