Gluten-Free Cheesy Southwest Lava Cakes

By Amber Woods on Thursday, June 11, 2020

Here it is a gorgeous spring day in southern California and I would love to be relaxing on a beach or hiking atop a mountain in the eastern Sierras. But I’m not, because I am being Safe At Home, as a responsible Californian. I mean someone has to, right? It seems like some people just …

Gluten-Free Curried Almond Chicken Bites

By Amber Woods on Thursday, June 4, 2020

In these days of COVID-19 fears, every girl needs a girlfriend to keep the positivity going and keep them motivated that the end is in sight. Whether that means the end of self-quarantine or the end of an endless trek up a mountain peak. Whenever I go for a hike with Donna the joke is …

I Remember the L.A. Riots

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 30, 2020

I wrote this almost ten years ago today, which felt like a lifetime ago. So many years before a pandemic, Safe and Stuck at Home, meeting the love of my life and finding my dream job. I wrote this blog about the L.A. riots almost ten years ago but these words still ring true to …

Gluten Free Cauliflower Fried Rice

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 30, 2020

Springtime used to mean Painted Lady Butterflies migrating through our alpine town. Last year springtime was baby donkeys grazing on the spring grass, wild lavender belly flowers on the Pacific Crest Trail and beavertail prickly pear cactus ripe with purple tart fruit. You knew it was officially springtime in Big Bear Lake, California when you …

R.I.P. Deep Creek

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Once upon a time in a forest far away four friends went on a hike and took a swim in the chilly waters of Deep Creek. They may have been millennials but still knew how to respect this gorgeous planet of ours and enjoyed an epic summers day in nature while being responsible adults. They …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
