The Happy Hikers 10 Essentials for Beautiful Feet

By Amber Wood on Thursday, June 15, 2023

If it’s any random day in July, you can probably find me trekking trails in the Eastern Sierra mountains. My trail pup and I tend to hike between twelve and eighteen miles a day in some of the most scenic wilderness in California. If it’s July my favorite Saucony running shoes are usually a muddy …

Gochujang Watermelon Radish Kimchi

By Amber Wood on Saturday, June 10, 2023

I live in a rural mountain town at over six thousand feet above the suburbia and smog of southern California. I’m so very blessed to spend my days out under the sugar pine limbs trekking trails and watching California’s bald eagles fishing in our alpine lake. It’s a bucolic life and it took me a …

Today is Earth Day! The puppy and I did all the things you can do after throwing out your back sneezing because you are an old lady. We grounded and reconnected barefoot with the earth (Also known as earthing) We frolicked in the snow. We chased ducks at the lake. And one of us even …

But Did You Die? Surviving a Coyote Attack

By Amber Wood on Monday, May 29, 2023

Hey girl, it’s me, your local Hungry Mountaineer hiking guide. As a female who identifies as a hiker, I’m the biggest forest fan of solo outdoor trekking. Nothing gives me more pleasure than packing my favorite doggo in the Jeep and hitting the trails for a scenic fifteen-mile trek into the wilderness. Add in four …

Living and Loving Life With a Deaf Dog

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, May 23, 2023

Let me tell you my elderly dog has always been a pain in the ass. Sometimes her adventures can be comical and great stories. I mean after she survives them. Like the time she befriended a smelly forest dog (A coyote) Or the time she went for a Gilligan’s Island-like adventure in the Pacific Ocean. …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
