Keto French Toast with Apricot Stilton Cheese

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, May 21, 2025

I’m not going to lie, I have not had a haircut in a year. My hairstylist has pissed me off so badly with her years of flakiness that I’m done. 2025 is the year to cut out ridiculous friends, colleagues and flaky acquaintances. This is why I shove keto French toast at my face. It …

Poor Man’s Venison Curry with Jicama “Spuds”

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, May 14, 2025

April days may mean spring showers. Or foggy, rainy spring days may mean great weather for creating a Venison Curry. It’s hard to say what the weather will be like in April in this mountain town. It could be seventy degrees out and I could bike ten miles back to Holcomb Valley with my adventure …

Baja-Style Chicken and Beet Lettuce Wrap with Blue Cheese Dressing

By Amber Woods on Sunday, May 11, 2025

If there is one day trip from southern California I just love, it is Baja  California. And I love it a whole mucho more now that I have my Global Entry card and we can bypass waiting for four hours at the San Ysidro entrance. This leads to far fewer chances to end up possibly …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
