Help, I Packed a Hair Dryer: A Beginner’s Guide to Backpacking

By Amber Woods on Friday, July 11, 2025

Leave the rosé at home, lace up those dusty trail runners (preferably not the neon ones from 2012), and prepare to traipse through the Inyo Wilderness for four soul-cleansing days of pure, unfiltered nature. That means sweating until you cry, sleeping on a rock that’s pretending to be a sleeping pad, and wondering why you …

Thrift Store Couture: How to Find Fashion Gold Without Smelling Like Aunt Martha’s House

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 7, 2025

We have all been there. You just thrifted the very best MAGA red sweater but OMG, there is a stain on the front in the shape of Elon Musk’s head. How could you possibly have missed that? I feel like when I go on a thrift store shopping mission, I tend to hit up so …

Cold Water, Hot Benefits: The Best Cold Plunge Lakes in California

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 3, 2025

So you are looking for the best lakes for a cold plunge in California. Are you crazy? Or do you just love to cold plunge in some alpine cold waters the way that I do? I don’t judge other cold plungers, this is not that one “Shrinkage” episode of Seinfeld, The Hamptons from 1994. Discover …

Fur Real: Why a Norwegian Forest Cat Might Be Your Purr-fect Match

By Amber Woods on Sunday, June 29, 2025

Imagine this: 25 pounds of pure, fluffy love, draped over your lap like an oversized, purring cloud. That’s the Norwegian Forest Cat for you. And yes, you read that right—25 pounds. These aren’t your average, dainty kitties. These are the chunky ex-bodybuilders of the feline world. If your cat were a Marvel superhero, the Norwegian Forest …

How to Make Sushi Without Rice: Smoked Ahi Rolls You’ll Crave

By Amber Woods on Monday, June 23, 2025

In 2009, John Mayer sang, “Your body’s a wonderland.” Like I wonder what the fuck will break this week. Will it be one of my ankles? Will I throw out my back lifting my twenty-five-pound Norwegian Forest Cat? Or will I pull my knee tripping over the dog? All of these options are pretty damn …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
