A Lake Superior Circle Tour Road Trip

By Amber Wood on Sunday, September 17, 2023

Canada can be such a confusing place. The Lake Superior Circle tour begins just north of Duluth Minnesota but once you cross the border at Grand Portage it does definitely feel like you are in a foreign country. Not just because those wacky Canadians call their dollars loonies (Seriously like you are in a cartoon …

Plum and Ginger Chutney

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, September 13, 2023

“It’s my Birthday” And all I really want is a rainy day with a side of baking and maybe a good book to read while snuggling my pets. But wait! I just got the best gift of all! Mexico says I am welcome! It has been over a year since I applied for my global …

The Best off the Beaten Path Thrift Stores in North America

By Amber Wood on Thursday, September 7, 2023

This late July, our family drove close to 8,000 miles just so I could shop at some of the best thrift stores in North America. Okay, actually we planned a cross-country road trip full of family reunions, and meet-ups with long-lost friends. And obviously, there were stops at numerous Thoroughbred racetracks across the country. We …

A Summer Vacation Guide to Road Trip Eastern Idaho

By Amber Wood on Monday, September 4, 2023

It’s been said “When you are tired of Idaho you are tired of life” Yup. I can see that. Idaho holds so much pristine beauty, even though in 2023 over 17,000 spoiled Califonias packed their Teslas and their ridiculous bro flat ball caps and moved to Boise and Coeur d’Alene. The wilderness of Idaho feels …

Anglo-Indian Ginger Plum Cake

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, August 30, 2023

When I was a kid whenever my mom would bake a cake she would tell us kids if we ran in the house the cake would fall in the middle. So obviously if we wanted cake we had to go outside and play. All day long. The forty-three-year-old baker in me now knows it does …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
