Blisters, Vacation Dogs, & Brown Sugar Bliss: My Hike for the Perfect Cookie

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, September 9, 2025

Let’s be honest—I don’t hike 20 miles a day because I’m trying to be the poster child for REI. I hike 20 miles because I want to shove as many gooey, buttery, chocolate-filled calories into my face without feeling an ounce of guilt. And the best part? My dog is right there with me, bounding …

White Chicken Chili with Corn and Poblanos

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 4, 2025

This week I found myself back in Facebook jail for well, being a big meany. I commented on a very funny local yar someone had posted about our mountain communities’ history and I said this is hilarious and so well-meaning and full of great history info… And one hundred percent created by ChatGPT! How do …

Sweet, Smoky, and Slightly Inappropriate: Candied Sausage Burnt Ends

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 29, 2025

After a summer’s camping morning of trekking to a backcountry lake, I definitely deserve some Meat Candy.  Hello there, Candied Sausage Burnt Ends. Trekking uphill at over 10,000 feet can be exhausting, but its all worth it when you get to relax at the end of the day at a private mountain lake beach, just …

Your New Favorite Dip: Cheesy Rotisserie Chicken Nacho Heaven

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 25, 2025

If it’s that favorite summertime holiday where we celebrate our independence in this country and even my liberal relatives wave a flag or two, you can find me in a large body of cool water in my Donald Trump blow-up floaty. And yes, I will have this nacho cheese dip recipe bubbling away in the …

Cheesy, Meaty, and Keto AF: BBQ Bison Taco Salad in an Edible Bowl

By Amber Woods on Thursday, August 21, 2025

I can’t wait to be a dirty camper again. I also can’t wait to shove a Keto Cheese Bowl at my face again. This right here is one of my favorite keto life hacks I discovered in the summertime of 2025. But first, I had to embarrass myself by wondering if I needed 2 a.m. …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
