Summer’s Over, Pass the Apple Spice Muffins

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, October 1, 2025

Doesn’t everyone pack a Donald Trump pool floatie for their girls getaway camping trip? No? Just me? Well, that explains the glares I got at every alpine lake I hiked to in the Eastern Sierra. But whatever—this was my last summertime outdoor woman hurrah before trading swimsuits for sweaters and Ugg boots. I was damn …

Are You There, God? It’s Me, a Dark Chocolate Zucchini Muffin Addict

By Amber Woods on Friday, September 26, 2025

Are you there, God? It’s me—no, not Margaret, but Big Bear Lake’s professional dirt walker, the Hungry Mountaineer. How am I doing? Well, let me tell you: eight months of chronic ankle pain has been hellish for this once-athletic, once mountain-goat-level trail runner. Do I feel envy when I see other runners spring past me …

Peach Caprese Salad with a Fig Balsamic Compote

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, September 23, 2025

Sometimes, you just have to unplug from the madness—family drama, doomscrolling, and the friends who yell at you for watching Fox News, even though they still think Real Housewives counts as “current events.” That’s when it’s time to pack up the dog, the natural deodorant that doesn’t work anyways, and head into the wilds for …

Saddle Up for a Boot Revival with Rub ‘N Restore

By Amber Woods on Saturday, September 20, 2025

Hi. I have a problem. Thrift store shopping is my vice. I can’t stop purchasing gently used cowboy boots. Thank the Lord for Eco-friendly leather repair products. They help me restore all those vintage cowboy boots to their boot-scootin’ glory. Yes, Taylor Swift may have been talking about me when she sang, “Hi. I’m the …

Momma’s Baked Beans: The Real Reason People Show Up at Family Reunions

By Amber Woods on Friday, September 12, 2025

If there is one thing my Mother does not appreciate, it’s my respect for Forty-Seven. But even Mama can appreciate a summer vacation road trip where Trump’s once inflatable head is riding shotgun! And she is always the most popular person in camp when she brings along a side dish of the best baked beans …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
