Would you like a Vegimite Sandwich?

By Amber Woods on Thursday, January 28, 2016

The year was 2003. It would be thirteen years prior to my first trip to Australia and actually consuming Vegemite on Australian soil, seeing boobs on Bondi Beach and relaxing for days at a time while consuming all the “Bugs” my body could handle on Fitzroy Island. This night would be the first actual      ” …

Pasta Carbanara with Zucchini and Pancetta

By Amber Woods on Monday, January 25, 2016

Once upon a time I was on the last mile out on a fifteen mile hike and I was dragging. The trail, formally completely frozen in the early morning hours was now a gooey, sticky, muddy mess and my exhausted feet felt like they were powering through gum as my legs fought with every step to process closer …

The Mountains are Calling

Beneath the Alpine Needles

By Amber Woods on Sunday, January 24, 2016

I’m staring at an entire mountain range that was decimated by wildfire two years ago. This used to be where I hiked beneath the Jeffrey pines and my dog frolicked in the freezing cold creeks. One June day as I watched flames spreading towards the highest peaks I felt like my heart was breaking for Lost …

Life of a Degenerate Gambler

Clockers Corner and the newest IPhone Feature

By Amber Woods on Thursday, January 21, 2016

Last week I spent an early morning watching ponies working out on the track as the sun rose beneath the San Gabriel Mountains. It was truly the most amazing sunrise. I feel so blessed with my crazy California life to get to be out here trackside on mornings like this. I felt so much joy …

'Merica! Central Coast Shenanigans

Lobster Mushrooms with Pistachio Oil and Goat Cheese

By Amber Woods on Monday, January 18, 2016

It was late November and we were disgruntled republicans so we felt a central coast road trip was in order. Four days of whining about Donald Trump and comparing Ted Cruz to Nathan Lane and making far to many jokes about “feeling the Bern” the best cure for disgruntled republican fever was four days of …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
