Bacon and Thyme Breakfast Sweet Potatoes

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 12, 2017

On a cold and wintry morning you really need to wake up to a bacon filled hot breakfast. Especially if lots of wine was involved the night prior. “Oh the weather outside is blizzardly” I may or may not have just sung those words to our dogs. Yes, I realize that blizzardly is not a …

A Path Through the Ice Plant

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 11, 2017

Sometime I dream about Mexico; The foggy beach mornings, walking through the ice plant down to the cold ocean below the beach houses, and the fun times I had in Baja California with friends when I was in my early twenties. I don’t dream of the Mexico of 2013 with the drugs and the gangs …

Santa Anita Big Cap Day

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 11, 2017
Santa Anita

If it’s a gorgeous Saturday in March then it must be Big Cap Day at Santa Anita Park! It feels like spring today with temperatures in the eighties and the sunlight bouncing off the still slightly snow capped Mt Baldy in the distance. It’s a fantastic day in southern California to head out to Santa …

How I Fell in Love with Alaska, Mosquito’s and All….

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 9, 2017

Before Alaska I had no idea that sour dough originated in Alaska. I had no idea that swarms of flies could make a grown man cry when he really needed desperately to pee. I had no idea how many smashed mosquito’s one rental car could hold. I had no idea what life was like in …

Trail Runner, Once Upon a Time

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, March 7, 2017

I used to be a trail runner. Back in the day (And these were the long lost days when I could easily run fifteen mountain miles) I had a 13.1 bumpersticker  on the back of my Subaru. I spent my paycheck happily on stupid expensive Asic running shoes and Teva water proof trail runners. One of …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
