The Real Big Bear Winter Guide: What Hallmark Movies Won’t Tell You

By Amber Woods on Saturday, December 6, 2025

Ah, Big Bear Lake—picturesque mountain town, home to towering Jeffrey Pines, pristine snowshoe trails, and two bald eagles who are more famous than half the cast of The Bachelor. With three million visitors descending on this tiny alpine village every year—most of them in winter—you might be wondering: Is it even possible to enjoy Big …

Yuletide Dark Chocolate Delights

By Amber Woods on Thursday, December 4, 2025

What do hiking, Christmas cookies and bear poo have in common? This recipe of course! Here in our home of Big Bear Lake, California, I’ve spent a lot of time out on the absolutely not snowy trails with my favorite hiking partner, my two-year-old Catahoula. Are the trails snowy? No, not at all. Does it …

Gluten Free Dark Chocolate Pecan Pie

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 3, 2025

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! Sure, it’s only December first, but I’m already brimming—overflowing, really—with holiday spirit. And what will we be consuming in this household all season long besides my beloved Nantucket Cranberry Tart? Obviously, gluten-free pies. Yes, plural. Yes, I’m the only one in my family who likes pecan pie. …

How to Install Snow Chains and Not Die on a SoCal Mountain Road

By Amber Woods on Saturday, November 29, 2025

You may have grown up in Detroit, Omaha, or some other place where snow is just “winter” and not “a natural disaster Instagrammed by tourists,” but Southern California mountain driving is a different beast entirely. Yes, they have snow in the Midwest. But what they do not have is a million switchbacks, a thousand feet …

Extra Ginger Gingersnap Sweet Potato Bars

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, November 26, 2025

Can we please discuss this barefoot revolution sweeping the nation like a TikTok trend absolutely no one asked for? Everywhere I go, someone’s demanding I remove my shoes at the door—as if my gently thrifted cowboy boots are harboring smallpox instead of just being fabulous. Meanwhile, those of us with plantar fasciitis are hobbling around …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
