The Devil Wears Celery Salt; Bloody Mary Deviled Eggs

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 31, 2025

Here in 2026, even the most health-conscious foodies (Hi, that’s me) are embracing clean comfort foods. Well, that is all fine and good after a hard day of “Work” snowshoeing twelve miles in one day as Big Bear Lake’s premier hiking guide, but I could use a beer right now. Or maybe a few Bloody …

My Keto Hearts of Palm Fried Rice: Low Carb, High Flavor, Zero Regrets

By Amber Woods on Sunday, December 28, 2025

It’s raining cats and dogs and squirrels here in Big Bear Lake—and I’m loving every glorious, soggy minute of it. What I’m not loving is the fact that I’m now over 48 hours into my colonoscopy fast, and my will to live is being held together by sheer spite and the promise of eventually shoving …

A Rum Cake My Butt Can Live With: Healthy-ish Anglo-Indian Christmas Cake

By Amber Woods on Thursday, December 25, 2025

Ho ho ho and happy holidays to all—especially to my fellow Anglo-Indian Rum Cake and fruitcake fanatics. As much as I adore a boozy Christmas rum cake, I do not adore what it does to my butt, thighs, or sense of self-worth. Which is why this year, I’m reinventing one of my favorite holiday traditions: …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
