Crazy Cat Lady

Carly the Christmas Miracle

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, December 4, 2018

It sounds like a tale you can’t make up if you tried; Our dog got loose from the pet sitter we hired from Rover, and ran four miles through the coyote and rattlesnake filled hills of Encinitas, California, before falling in a canal and floating down the swiftly moving waters of the San Elijo Lagoon …

Easy Holiday Pine Cone Decorations

By Amber Woods on Saturday, December 1, 2018

Living in a resort town at seven thousand feet you get very used to pine cones, pine needles and tree sap. Being a mountain girl, in our household, we use pine cones a lot more as fire starters then decorations but normally just like clockwork when we have friends come to visit they see a …

The Hungry Mountaineer’s Complete Guide to a Anglo Indian Mountain Thanksgiving

By Amber Woods on Saturday, November 24, 2018

It’s the week of Thanksgiving and I’m trying madly to pull myself away from hiking up mountains and mountain biking up fire roads because it’s almost the holiday and hosting an Anglo Indian Thanksgiving means meal prepping a few things ahead of time. Do I really need to set aside my hiking boots and my …

How to have a Sustainable Thanksgiving Holiday

By Amber Woods on Saturday, November 17, 2018

In our family, when it comes to the end of November and those last few crisp and cool days of autumn before winter embraces our ski town, we like to give thanks for the blessings of our harvest, like our massive crop of Honeycrisp Apples, mint and fields of green onions. (But maybe not for …

Anglo Indian Mint Chutney with Serranos and Mango

mint chutney

Today amongst the falling fall leaves floating in the mountain breeze, I voted for the first time in the city of Big Bear Lake and I also made the most unbelievable mint chutney. I tried to do my civic duty with my mail in ballot but I filled out one of the state propositions very, …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
