Indiana Jones and Dad’s Temple of Crap

By Amber Woods on Saturday, April 6, 2019

I used to blog about my parents all the time when I lived in the same town as them and my dad walked around the front yard in his ripped underwear or took his Siamese cat on a leash into the local hardware store. I live on the other side of the mountain range from …

An Open Letter to Senator Dianne Feinstein

By Amber Woods on Thursday, April 4, 2019

Dear Senator Feinstein, You don’t know me but I am one of the 17,000 individuals employed in the Southern California horse racing industry. I’m a handicapper, wagering ambassador and thoroughbred racehorse owner. Aside from that, I am a fan of the sport of king’s ever since the first time I watched the Kentucky Derby when …

It’s just barely March and I am already dreaming of fourteeners. One California snowy fourteener in particular. Yes, every winter in our household, we start daydreaming about hot summer days in the eastern sierras and summiting Mt Whitney, the highest mountain in the continental United States. I live in sunny southern California in a rural …

Don’t Call Search and Rescue Just Yet

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 30, 2019

I swear I heard a rumor that its springtime under these frozen pine limbs but it was so blustery this morning on my hike that my iPhone simply refused to turn on whatsoever. One minute my frozen iPhone went from sixty percent battery to three percent battery as I was trying to take a selfie …

Rainy Day Fun for the Indoor Confined Hiker

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, March 27, 2019

Dear diary, It’s 10:30 a.m. and it has been raining cats and dogs for forty-eight hours now. I have not laced up my North Face hikers snow boots and hit the trail, any trail, with my favorite four-legged mutt in fifty-five hours, ten minutes and four seconds. I’m feeling wired, and edgy from all the …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
