Hazelnut Latte Hot Toddy

By Amber Woods on Friday, March 10, 2023

After four days of blizzards, shoveling so much snow and more blizzards and shoveling I might need to sit in my backyard on my snow couch with a hot toddy. After so many years of drought, some may call it a March miracle. Some may call it the great Big Bear blizzard of ’23. I …

Winter Arugala & Squash Salad with Cashew, Coconut Milk and Cinnamon Vinaigrette

By Amber Woods on Sunday, March 5, 2023

Ho ho ho and happy holidays. Now can we move on to my favorite winter squash salad? There might be snowshoes on my feet and snow on the ground but I still prefer salad for lunch. Truth be told, I eat salad for lunch at least five days a week. If I have a busy …

Air Fryer Keto Jalapeno Poppers with Extra Pig Dust

keto Jalapeno Poppers

Are you ready for some sports ball? I think the rest of my family is enjoying the sports ball grand finale. I’m personally enjoying creating keto delicacies to shove at my face because really, I needed a sports ball grand championship as a reason to create the cheesiest most bacon-y snacks ever. And to take …

Sweet Potato and Sun Dried Tomato Masoor Dal

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 26, 2023

Did you know there is no such dish really as a curry? You may see curry on a lot of six ninty nine cheap Indian lunch buffets but what you think of as a curry might be a dal. Or it might be a tandoori dish. It could even be a tamarind studded jalfrezi if …

Dudhi Kofta with Pumpkin Air-Fryer Dumplings

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, February 22, 2023

Contrary to what I thought, Kofta does not mean stuffed balls. A kofta curry in most middle eastern or Asian cuisine usually means some kind of meatball. Although this January our family is enjoying a vegetarian diet so I made this version with leftover pumpkins from our garden. Yes, you can have middle eastern kofta …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
