Winter Creek Run

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 4, 2013

The goal today was to run about six miles on the Pacific Crest Trail.  Snow Flake and I had done ten miles at Holcomb Valley the day before and we were both pretty beat up. On top of that we had a late start to the morning. We did accomplish six miles along the creek …

My Great Snowy Fall Uphill

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 3, 2013

Today I fell up a mountain.    It takes a real talent to fall uphill but luckily, well I am a talented girl.    I should point out the road we drove than ran up was incredibly icy.     We off roaded up Pilque Canyon Road to this point where we parked the just detailed a …

A 26 Locks Adventure

By Amber Woods on Thursday, January 31, 2013

Today I took Snow Flake on her first snow run.    The road didn’t look to bad at first, just a little bit of snow on the abandoned dirt roads.    Than we ran up a hill and around a corner and suddenly there was snow up to our knees in some spots.    This was …

Cat Box Surprise?

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, January 29, 2013

I think flatlanders are getting desperate in their snow play needs.   Today when I began my run I saw an abandoned cat box in the snow play area.   Yes, I truly believe some stupid, stupid person used this as a sled.    What other reason would there be to have an abandoned cat box in …

There is no Goat Cheese in Jail

By Amber Woods on Monday, January 28, 2013

This last week I received some absolutely shocking news.     Someone I knew had committed a crime and had been arrested. This person, who I thought I knew, had a criminal history I knew nothing about and is now going to spend a lot of his youth in jail.     He deserves this …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
