Steakhouse Salad with Korean Red Chili Vinaigrette

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 15, 2023

I’ve always dreamed of the bluegrass of Kentucky. Ever since I was a little girl of twelve years old watching the Kentucky Derby on my tiny vintage t.v. with the dial to change the channels. I dreamt of the day I would stand under the spires of Churchill Downs and listen to My Old Kentucky …

Black Bean Taquitos with Mint Chutney

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, October 10, 2023

If it’s the first week of autumn you can probably find our family trekking through the leaves of the eastern Sierras. This autumn we headed up to Aspendell just outside of Bishop just a touch early to see the Aspens changing colors but we were able to find some hidden trails where the yellows and …

Jalapeno Nachos with Tri Tip

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 5, 2023

We were driving away from the heat and humidity of Memphis last week in our motorhome, sweating no not from the God-awful hot wetness but from the Hattie B’s crazy hot Nashville Chicken skins we were shoving at our faces. Seriously I could not stop, If you love spice they were the best thing ever. …

Gluten-Free Dark Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 1, 2023

Apparently, I just had to go back to the place where I hurt my ankle to heal my ankle. Ah, the magical effect of the Eastern Sierra’s. The eastern Sierras feel even more magical on a snowy fall day as the morning light is shining upon the amber aspen trees. Especially when I’m not limping …

Pickled Pepper and Cold Cuts Keto Salad

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 28, 2023

Should I really be wearing a bathing suit after five days of vacation inhaling every deep-fried food I could find in the south? Well, it’s hard to help yourself from dunking in that gorgeous lake over yonder when it’s nearing one hundred degrees outside with seventy, yes seventy percent humidity. Spending five days inside this …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
