Gnocchi with Pancetta and Pistachio Pesto

By Amber Woods on Friday, January 30, 2015

Waking up in Sydney reminds me that I don’t like the city.      We spent the last four days vacationing on a tropical island off the coast of Australia. It was quiet, secluded and beautiful. Giant monitor lizards slowly walked across the hiking trails into the jungle giving us dirty looks.   …

You can’t take me anywhere

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, January 27, 2015

I don’t usually act like a big shot who has a blog until you get some Chardonnay in me.     Than all bets are off. It was our first day of our vacation on Fitzroy Island. We had reservations for dinner at 7:30 at Zephyr, the only restaurant on the Island. ( …

Like an Episode of Lost

We woke up this morning to a pounding rain storm. Our tropical island vacation began the first day of monsoon season. This area has not had a drop of rain for months and our second and third day on the island it poured. More and more this vacation is reminding me of being on the …

The Nicest People; Quite a Change!

By Amber Woods on Friday, January 23, 2015

25,000 feet above Australia and I just had my first Australian meal. Yes, it was airplane food.  I obviously wasn’t expecting much but in according with everything I had heard about Australian food it was pretty bland.      So many things about Australia so far remind me a lot of England. …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
