Turkalo; A Recipe for Buffalo Style Turkey Jerky

By Amber Woods on Thursday, April 16, 2015

You guys know I love bringing jerky to snack on during my hikes. Whether it’s teriyaki turkey jerky, standard beef jerky, or honey mustard chicken jerky, I love it all! But, my favorite jerky is turkalo which is a name that confuses almost all the new people I say it to! “What the hell is …

Cashew Date and Banana Smoothie

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, April 14, 2015

If there is one think that has nothing in common with smoothies, juicing and healthy living, it is truckers. Hi. Let me tell you about my dad. My dad is a country music listening, truck driving man. He once found a dead rattle snake-skin on the side of the freeway and stopped his big rig …

Spring Training Update

By Amber Woods on Sunday, April 12, 2015

It’s the first few days of spring in my mountain town and I’m still ninety percent couch bound. I have a follow up doctors appointment this morning and I’m hoping, praying the doctor will give me another shot of pain killers in my ass so I can have one day of feeling like a normal …

It feels so good not to slip off icy Mt Baldy! Thank god for my cat trax; these babies might have literally saved my life today. My boyfriend I decided to try to conquer Mt Baldy (Also known as Mt San Antonio to the locals) on the windiest day Southern California saw this winter. Above …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
