I’ll Have the Nut Cream; Regional Cuisine of Baja

By Amber Wood on Friday, March 24, 2017

My home town is not well known for its regional cuisine. Spoiler alert; it’s not nut cream! The running joke in my rural mountain home town is that the regional cuisine is squirrel. We are mainly joking. So instead I would like to share a blog about a “regional cuisine” from my favorite vacation town, a …

Bacon it’s so Delicious it’s Worth Ending friendships

By Amber Wood on Wednesday, March 22, 2017

Is there anything better than crispy, crispy bacon goodness? Unless you’re a vegetarian and then your life is just incomplete. In the last month and a half I’ve tried to mainly eat a vegan diet so the times I’ve been eating any meat at all let alone bacon are few and far between. Also my …

Desperate Housewives of the OC vs The Snot Monster

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, March 21, 2017

I definitely offended some desperate housewives today. One thing is for sure and that is you can take the mountain girl out of the mountains but you can’t take the mountains out of the girl. At 6 AM this fall morning I got up before the sun and slurped my coffee with some protein powder …

The Best Homemade Curry Powder

By Amber Wood on Sunday, March 19, 2017

Today was supposed to be the easy workout day. Than I chased our dog and another dog who was attacking her down a dirt road, throwing my mountain bike down in the middle of a dirt road. Meanwhile this crazy mutt’s seventy year old owner was kicking my ass beating me by a quarter mile trying …

Anglo Indian Corned Beef with Garam Masala and Sweet Potatoes

By Amber Wood on Saturday, March 18, 2017
corned beef

Yesterday was St Patrick’s Day and that means corned beef is a must in our household! I spent my day at work and than driving home to our ski town in insane Los Angeles traffic though so making the corned beef dinner would have to wait until my day off. This morning most of our friends …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
