Carbanara Whole Wheat Pizza with Peas and Pancetta

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 27, 2013

I just ran almost two thousand feet if altitude gain in a little more than five miles.      I have a love hate relationship with Slide Peak, the tallest mountain at the ski resort near my house, at something like 7,800 feet.      I love running, and I love eating pizza …

Above a sea of clouds

By Amber Woods on Saturday, October 26, 2013

Living in a mountain forest a little more than a hundred miles from the Pacific Ocean there are many days that we can look over the rim of the mountain and see a sea of haze and clouds five thousand feet down below.       It happens constantly in June. In California …

I hiked sixteen miles today with over five thousand feet altitude gain.      That last two miles sludging back to my car all I could think was        ” Yea ceviche for dinner!”       Not just any ceviche but ceviche  of scallops, shrimp and calamari with tropical pineapple …

Nothing but Brothels and Donkeys

By Amber Woods on Thursday, October 24, 2013

We were flying through the vast Nevada desert Listening to the boss Bruce Springsteen blast through the cars speakers. Ankle Pain Snake Ow

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, October 22, 2013

I smell bad, real bad. I just ran fifteen miles and now I’m sitting at Urgent Care wondering if my ankle is broken. Lucky I knew where I was going, otherwise I might have been sat searching for the nearest Urgent Care places. At least I know that there are loads of Urgent Care places …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
