I’ll Have the Nut Cream

By Amber Woods on Friday, December 5, 2014

I should have known as soon as we walked into our suite.      The first thing I noticed, well besides the spacious floor plan and the ocean front view was the painting of the dude grabbing his nuts.     As soon as my boyfriend walked into the bedroom it was the first …

Playas and Converting Miles to Kilometers

By Amber Woods on Monday, December 1, 2014

It’s been eight years since I have been to Mexico.      Let me tell you, Mexico is still a cluster fuck for the California driver.      You cross the border and laws what fucking laws?       Every intersection is a traffic circle.      It’s a desperate dance in a two ton Japanese SUV to …

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ( Cats in Sweaters Edition!)

By Amber Woods on Sunday, November 30, 2014

Do you think this sweater will fit my cat?” The weary Target employee, already looking haggard with trying to be nice to customers in early November, gives me a dirty look. I can almost hear his thoughts coming through his dead retail eyes; Why the hell is this girl buying a sweater …

Only in America

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 27, 2014

You know what’s great about this country we live in?       We have so many personal freedoms.       And a hell of a lot of people are taking advantage of those freedoms tonight.       We have the right to peacefully protest. Yet instead of peacefully protesting …

Curried acorn squash with Wild Rice Stuffing

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, November 25, 2014

We actually got half an inch of snow last night!      A whole half an inch! So sad that this excited us in a drought year!      It may have been just a dusting but at least it made the trails and dirt roads a little pretty.      I spent …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
