Gluten Free Almond Banana Bread with Candied Ginger

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, February 18, 2020

It’s not very often that I say the words “These bugs are Alaska bad” The last time I screamed those words at a desolate wilderness was a few months ago as I ran from an angry swarm of mosquitoes straight up the hill towards Valentine Lake Trailhead. It was exhausting as I pushed my body …

The not so Hungry Mountaineers Guide to the Amalfi Coast and Beyond

By Amber Woods on Thursday, February 13, 2020

I never imagined when we planned our trip to the Amalfi Coast that I would travel to Italy and actually lose weight. How on earth could one ravenously hungry mountaineer possibly do that in the land of delicious platters of in house-made pasta and wood-fired pizzas? As a fan of all things authentic pizza and …

The Great Toilet Rapture of 2020; Or a few days away in Goa

By Amber Woods on Saturday, February 8, 2020

It was January 2020 and I was so ready to return to the world of running water, electricity and toilet seats. Mainly toilet seats. Clean toilet seats would be ideal. We had been on holiday since Christmas Eve in Bangalore, India and as usual the hustle and bustle of being in a big city was …

How to not travel like a ‘Merican. Let’s Make Overseas Travel Classy Again!

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 3, 2020

We all know that American traveler from Texas, you know the one, with the long blonde extensions and the Texas tramp stamp on her booty, in those low-slung True Religion jeans. She probably just cut in line with her travel companions at Costa Coffee and then in a demanding twangy Fort Worth accent ordered a …

Surviving the Venice Bird Flu of 2020

By Amber Woods on Monday, January 27, 2020

When we planned our trip to Venice in 2019, I was envisioning plates of hot Cicchetti Tapas filled with eggplant and hopefully some goat cheese. Or maybe delicious espresso coffee drinks and raisin filled zeppole just like the ones I had in February 2002 when I roamed Venice’s alleys and canals with six friends. In …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
