Life of a Degenerate Gambler

A Degenerate Gambler’s Summer Vacation

By Amber Woods on Saturday, May 4, 2024

The first time I convinced my family to take me to the horse races I was twelve years old. I had on my huge nineties oversized nerdy glasses that, I can’t believe this, but are back in style here in 2023! I’m sure I could see the ponies so well behind the extremely thick plastic …

It’s time for the big storm. Is everyone ready for the big storm? Did you put your snow chains back in your Jeep? Did you stock up on almond flour at Costco? Do you have enough wine??? Big Bear Lake, California has not had a storm this wet and cold since 1977. Our small alpine …

So you want to go camping in Big Bear

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, April 23, 2024

When it comes to camping, everybody has to start somewhere. Usually, there are hijinks involved, bears break into coolers and someone always freezes their ass off. I’ve camped with a lot of newbie campers. Yes, they are usually the first ones to not listen and have the bears eat all their food the first night. …

Dahi Samosa Chaat with Peach Ginger Chutney

By Amber Woods on Sunday, April 21, 2024

When world travelers talk about Toronto they talk about hockey or catching a Jay’s game. They don’t mention an extremely overcrowded sweaty city with an undercurrent of social unrest building in the eves. There are not many things I miss from our adventures over two weeks in Toronto, Ontario. (I mean besides besides my boyfriend’s …

A Quest for a Spicy Keto Queso

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, April 16, 2024

I’ve always loved the snow. Even when I was ten years old and instead of playing with my friends I was shoveling the driveway. No one in our 90’s era working-class neighborhood had a snow blower, certainly not my family. Our mountain neighborhood was always quiet when I was outdoors shoveling feet of snow, which …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
