Going to the Woods is Going Home

Mammoth or Bust

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

It’s a beautiful day to drive to Mammoth.   Southern California reminds me more of Connecticut today as we drive through the blink and you will miss them towns of Lone Pine, Big Pine and Independence, California.     The leafless trees are so spooky looking against the harse blue sky.    They remind me of …

Tail Gating in the Warm December Sunshine

By Amber Woods on Sunday, December 9, 2012

Only in American could you have a great time in a parking lot.    It is December.    And it is an eighty degree day.     I am with one of my very best friends eating a Boca burger, sipping on a seasonal ale and yes, I just made parking lot guacamole. Dude, tail gating is fun!I am …

Living in the Land of Milk and Honey

By Amber Woods on Sunday, December 9, 2012

Last week all over the Facebook I saw the same thing; friends of mine complaining that they hadn’t won the lottery.    Now this is a free country and every one has the right to throw their money away on lottery tickets if they feel like it but what I was thinking amid all these …

I was doing some research on all things Alaska and came across this little snippet on BlogHer. It’s interesting number one,as it took place at Mountain High Pizza Pie, which is the best pizza place in the entire world.    It’s interesting number two, as Talkeetna, Alaska is my favorite place in the entire …

Bear Creek Made me her Bitch Again

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 29, 2012

I told myself I would never attempt Bear Creek again, so how did I find myself running the Bear Creek Trail on a fall morning?    Boredom I guess. I get so bored running the same trails daily. Yesterday I ran eleven miles easy so I figured I could handle the 1,800 foot ascent to Bear …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
