Curry is Forever ( And a recipe for the best Curried Chicken Salad Ever)

By Amber Wood on Sunday, May 4, 2014

“Let’s do a hard hike”   My best friend was visiting home from the beaches of San Luis Obispo. I was thinking on such a warm summers day we would do a easy three mile loop to the creek and spend the afternoons on the little sandy beach drinking beer and jumping off of cliffs into …

In Hot Pursuit

By Amber Wood on Friday, May 2, 2014

Some days I really doubt that any one has a family as unique as mine.            I called my Dad yesterday to have a conversation.     He than yelled at me on the phone     “I can’t talk right now! I’m sitting on a toilet at a truck stop!”     ???     Why did he answer in the …

A Torturous Tremendous Tommy’s Adventure ( Or don’t go hiking in Barstow)

By Amber Wood on Monday, April 28, 2014

Any one who knows me knows if in hungry you better get the hell out of my way.       My friends who hike with me bring extra snacks because no one wants to deal with Amber’s attitude if she runs out of food four miles from the car.       I have a big appetite …

Valley of Fire State Park ( And Painful Pretty Flowers from Hell)

By Amber Wood on Sunday, April 27, 2014

Don’t ever, ever touch the prettiest flower in the desert. When hiking in the desert just remember that the flowers hate you and they are usually covered in thorns. The pretty white desert flowers may look soft and intriguing but take my word on this, unless you want to be pulling tiny little thorns out of …

A Wild Life; Growing up in the Mountains in the 80’s

By Amber Wood on Friday, April 25, 2014

It all started with those damn raccoons. Those damn, cute, adorable I want to hug them except they might be rapid, raccoon. I grew up at nearly seven thousand feet in a small mountain town. I did not have a typical childhood. I never sat in front of the TV watching Reading Rainbow or playing …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
