You Never Think This Could Happen Here

By Amber Woods on Friday, September 4, 2015

You never expect that someone you went to high school with will turn out to be a mass murderer.         I didn’t anyways. I grew up in a small rural town surrounded by pine forests.         Most of my good friends I knew since Kindergarten. We were a …

Wasabi Shrimp Stuffed Wontons

By Amber Woods on Thursday, September 3, 2015

I was planning to write a post about how to harvest nopales. I don’t actually care for nopales but I saw so many juicy succulent ones today on our hike on the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) that I thought to myself, how hard could it be to take those big quills out of the cactus …

Sour Dough Pancakes (Or an Alaskan breakfast)

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, September 1, 2015

I had these Sourdough Pancakes in Talkeetna Alaska in 2003. They were the best pancakes I had ever had and I had been dying for years to make them myself but could never figure out how to get my hands on sour dough starter. I found sour dough on EBay last year and my …

The Magic of Henna

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 31, 2015

I’m thirty five years old and now I can say I have smothered my hair in cow dung. Happy birthday to me? I celebrated my thirty fifth birthday with an absolutely phenomenal home made crab curry my boyfriend made from scratch. It was a relaxing evening at home having cocktails with our friend and neighbor …

How to properly use a Wag Bag

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 28, 2015

Before hiking Mt Whitney last week, the Lone Pine Forest Rangers instructed our group that any one hiking the Mt Whitney Trail had to use a Wag Bag to get rid of their human waste on the mountain.     At the Lone Pine Ranger Station they had a delightful diagram showing just how to …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
