This Date Tamarind Cilantro Chutney Is Still Cheaper Than a Plane Ticket to India

By Amber Woods on Monday, February 23, 2026

Ever the adventurous foodie, even I had never tried chutney before traveling to southern India. Not once. Not even the sad little jar hiding on the back shelf of Whole Foods next to the marmalade no one ever admits to buying. Then I tasted date chutney in India. One bite in and I was done. …

The Low-Sugar Granola I Eat When I’m Adulting

By Amber Woods on Saturday, February 21, 2026

Here in 2026, there’s a growing emphasis on gut health and a push towards high protein and fiber-friendly foods like legumes, lentils, chickpeas, beans, whole grains and fiber-rich vegetables. Whole Foods snacks are the trend here in 2026. After a day of snow hiking eight miles for work with my clients, you bet your ass …

Sweet Potato Chaat Waffle Boats: Indian Comfort Food Without a Passport

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, February 18, 2026

My life these days is basically work, hike, Jeep tours, and physical therapy. I have an amazing physical therapist here in Big Bear Lake, California — truly, she’s a saint — but damn it, I want to be fixed. I’m tired of spending an hour a week being lasered like a broken iPhone. One thing …

Pomegranate High Protein Raita: When Indian Yogurt Meets Protein Goals

By Amber Woods on Sunday, February 15, 2026

I wish I were in southern India right now—sitting at a chaat house, wearing a colorful kurti that I paid four American dollars for, plastic chair wobbling, elbow-to-elbow with strangers, scooping up yogurty raita that absolutely does not contain pomegranate seeds… and is definitely not high protein. If we were actually in southern India, no …

Big Bear Lake Winter Storm Travel Tips for Holiday Weekend Chaos

By Amber Woods on Friday, February 13, 2026

Help. There’s a Snowstorm Coming to Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Lake, California, is magical during a snowstorm. It’s the kind of powdery Hallmark postcard scene that makes you want to sip cocoa and post inspirational captions about winter wonderlands. The Big Bear Lake winter storm season, when there is a massive winter event predicted, …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
