Vegan Mango Curry with Rice Noodles and Cashews

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 17, 2015

It’s mid August and I’m camping at over seven thousand feet and I’m freezing cold. Seriously! Yes, that is right; I said August! What is with this summer that does not actually feel like summer? I’m ready for those summer days of swimming in crisp alpine lakes, but the water not being so cold that it makes me …

The Sun Never Sets in Alaska

By Amber Woods on Sunday, August 16, 2015

The first week I was in Alaska the sun never set. Every evening was a sunset that just wouldn’t end. It was glorious. You know how sometimes you see those sunsets that are just so damn gorgeous you wish they would never last forever? That was one of my first experiences in Alaska and it made me …

By Amber Woods on Saturday, August 15, 2015

When we were in Vegas we visited some hoity toity restaurants where we paid way to much for breakfast just to have cold potatoes and burned food and then wait staff turn up their noses at us when we had the balls to complain. The staff at Aria’s Aria Café seemed to be saying “Oh? …

Gorgonzola Gnocchi Soup

By Amber Woods on Thursday, August 13, 2015

Our morning began early. Up at five, steaming cups of dark coffee in hand, we were dressed and ready to make our way to the dock a little after six. The forecast was for a rainy afternoon and thunderstorms. We were praying for the dark rain clouds to invade our mountain and put out the …

Moldy American Adventures in Munich

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, August 12, 2015

I had to be the smelliest person in Munich. Okay, actually of the ten people in our group, I’m not sure which one of us was actually the smelliest but we all did not smell great. In 2007 we spent five days camping in Munich for Oktoberfest. It was an absolutely amazing beer-soaked and brat …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
