A Day on the Trail

By Amber Wood on Friday, November 18, 2016

Mornings in the eastern sierras like this one are a great stress reliever. When I feel like the realities of life (And living a life where Donald Trump, a reality t.v. star will be president; just putting that into words still feels like science fiction!) are starting to get to me, hiking fifteen miles through …

Another Heavenly Fall Day

By Amber Wood on Thursday, November 17, 2016

Fall leaves crunch under my toes and every where all I see reds, oranges and yellows. I live in the mountains above the valley of San Bernardino, California and every day I feel blessed to be here. In the valley below you would not even know that it’s fall. It’s over a …

Adventures at The Bridgeport Hot Springs

By Amber Wood on Tuesday, November 15, 2016

It’s taken me years to get a chance to really explore the Bridgeport/ Twin Lakes area but in twenty-four hours I think I did it all. I did not however bake a batch of this ridiculous good coconut bread today but that can wait until I’m back from vacation in a week. Back to Bridgeport. …

Wood Makes Me Happy

By Amber Wood on Saturday, November 12, 2016

I was literally sitting in my campground just now cursing the rude people who started their generator at six a.m. I had just destroyed some firewood with an ax and yes maybe I had a beer or two. It’s been a highly stressful day. The Hungry Mountaineer needed a hop filled beverage to make her …

Fresh Mountain Air Helps

By Amber Wood on Friday, November 11, 2016

In a world where we can’t get a minutes rest from the noise of Fox News, CNN, Donald Trump and Hillary sometimes it’s nice to just sit in a silent forest and just be. At 10,000 feet you don’t even hear birds in the tall limber pines. Sometimes I hear a bee or the roar …

About Me
Amber Woodyard
Amber Woodyard

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at [email protected] for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
