Spinach Bran Muffins, a Healthy St Patrick’s Day Snack

By Amber Woods on Saturday, March 13, 2021

Happy St Patrick’s Day 2021! This St Patrick’s Day is like no other in history. A global pandemic is making it nearly impossible to drink green beer with friends in a crowded bar. If I can’t partake in beer with unnatural food coloring in it then I might as well head in the opposite direction. …

Cancel Culture, The Hungry Mountaineer and the Snow Pigs

By Amber Woods on Thursday, March 11, 2021
cancel culture

Today for the first time in my life cancel culture became my reality. I was put in Facebook jail for insulting our lovely tourists who urinate in our front yards and start bonfires in the ski resort parking lots here in this alpine town. I had no idea that calling these uncaring human beings Snow …

Muttar Peas and Tofu Masala with Cottage Cheese

By Amber Woods on Monday, March 8, 2021

If I can say one positive thing about the year 2020, it was the year I became a better Indian chef. Did I master the art of baking crispy fall apart in your mouth buttery with ghee parathas? Not a chance. Did I learn how to get the batter just right for holiday Anglo-Indian rose …

Keto Gluten Free Kung Pao Chicken

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, March 3, 2021

I’m a child of the eighties. I grew up with cassette tapes. My parents made me play outside. We had a rotary wall phone if anyone were to call. And don’t even think of trying to make a long-distance call! I remember when we first got a huge monstrosity of a computer and then dial-up …

Dark Chocolate Cake with Blackberry Mascarpone Cream

By Amber Woods on Friday, February 26, 2021

I definitely snowshoe up mountains so that I can shove a dark chocolate cake in my face. Did you know that snowshoeing up a mountain burns over one thousand calories an hour? That sounds like a challenge to me! Luckily here in Big Bear Lake, we have two feet of slightly icy snow if you …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
