Moo. A Cottonwood Pass Trail Report

By Amber Woods on Monday, July 26, 2021

Well, that was a new one. Today my dog almost caused a stampede. It’s just a normal Monday in the life of an outdoor adventure guide. Wait, a minute, wasn’t I on vacation? Yes, even while on vacation I simply can not stay away from the great outdoors and all the creatures that graze along …

Mcleod Lake Trash Report; I mean Trail Report

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, July 21, 2021

A month of shenanigans in the eastern Sierras should have me emersed in zen-like alpine trails and frolicking with marmots or at least the elusive Golden-Mantle grey squirrel. Not muttering under my breathe every time I almost step in dog feces or pick up other day hikers disregarded cigarette butts and empty Monster energy cans. …

Lil Walker Big Mosquito Road Kill Lake

By Amber Woods on Tuesday, July 13, 2021

I hate being that person who relies on technology, apps and popular websites in order to recreate, but that is the world we live in here in 2021. A popular Facebook outdoor group let me know about a hidden fishing hole tucked away in the high Sierras called Lil Walker Lake. Thank you social media …

A Hiker’s Ill Fated Journey up to the Laurel Lakes

By Amber Woods on Sunday, July 11, 2021

I can see now why no hikers dare to trek up to the Laurel Lakes. I feel like after so many years hiking to all of the different lakes of the high sierra’s, I’ve hiked to all of the most scenic lakes. Laurel Lakes beckoned me because it was something new that I hadn’t done …

An Authetic Anglo-Indian Panang Curry with Shrimp

By Amber Woods on Thursday, July 8, 2021

In 2014 I tried to make homemade authentic Thai food for the first time. Now making authentic Thai Panang curry and heating up some Trader Joe’s pad that from the freezer section are two completely different things. For authentic Thai food, you have to hunt down ethnic ingredients like lemongrass, galangal root and kaffir lime …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
