Big Bear Lake Limiting STR’s, Vote Yes on O!

By Amber Woods on Monday, November 7, 2022

Today is the day. Did you get out and vote? Here in our mountain town of Big Bear Lake, I can’t recall a time when our residents were more divided on social issues. Part of that is because of Measure O in Big Bear Lake. Measure O hopes to limit the number of vacation rentals …

Quinoa Salad with Chickpeas & Tahini Curried Dressing

By Amber Woods on Thursday, November 3, 2022

It might already be September here in Southern California but I’m not breaking out the sweaters and Ugg boots yet. (But I might be thrift store shopping for them!) Here in Big Bear Lake, we are having a uber-sweaty heat wave. I can never remember a Labor Day weekend where the heat got to be …

Excuse me While I shove these Fall Baking Favorites at my Face

I just hiked up a mountain! In a snowstorm! With my favorite vacation dog! In her favorite sweater! Don’t you just love fall weather? I sure know I do! Now I’m ready to eat a bunch of baked goods! As the scenic resort town of Big Bear Lake, California‘s reining pop-up picnic queen I spend …

Mono Pass snowy Shenanigan’s in the eastern Sierras

By Amber Woods on Wednesday, October 26, 2022

The morning began with my pup trying to go for a swim in her favorite sweater at a tiny trailside lake above the Litle Lake’s Valley. The autumn colors were simply amazing here but it was not good weather for a swim. This was before it began snowing. I was not in shape to hike up …

Fall Food, Fashion and Reading Must Haves

By Amber Woods on Sunday, October 23, 2022

Here in the United States, we refer to autumn as fall because, well we are villagers. The maple and oak leaves fall from the deciduous trees therefore it is fall. Now give me my sugary Pumpkin Spice Latte said the girl in the red, white and blue Ugg’s and the MAGA hat. Americans are known …

About Me
Amber Wood
Amber Wood

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest and I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a hiking guide who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures in my blog on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
