Mt Whitney

Mt Whitney or Bust!

By Amber Woods on Thursday, August 29, 2024

If you don’t start your birthday by puking in public you are just not having a good time. Right? That may be what I told myself as I froze my ass off at the top of a fourteen-hundred-foot mountain yesterday. Maybe I was just trying to distract myself from the biting wind chill in my …

P U; What is the Best Natural Deodorant, 2024 Edition

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 23, 2024

It’s summertime here in the mountains of southern California. As I spent these few months training to climb the tallest mountain in the continental United States, Mt Whitney, you had better believe that I spent a lot of time sweating.  Most days, the pup and I try to go for at least a five-mile run/hike. …

Abolish that Lovely Dirty Camper Smell from a Motorhome

By Amber Woods on Friday, August 16, 2024

As much as we all love the call of the great outdoors, oh, the joys of having indoor motorhome plumbing can lead to some odors. Spending your life hiking up mountains, mountain biking along alpine streams, and cuddling with your smelly adventure dog can make for smelly campers by the evening back at camp.  In …

The Best Ever Sourdough Pizza Dough

By Amber Woods on Monday, August 5, 2024

It was finally spring 2024 and the sun was shining, the birds were singing and my sourdough starter was fermenting nicely. Even though I was four loaves deep into my Knead for freshly baked sourdough bread something was missing from my life. Was it sourdough pizza? Perhaps! Or maybe it was something more physical then …

Hike. Jeep. Repeat. Big Bear's only outdoor adventure guide
Amber Woods
Amber Woods

Hi y’all! I’m Amber, Big Bear Lake’s local Hungry Mountaineer hiking nature guide. I grew up here in the San Bernardino National Forest. I have basically been out exploring hiking trails and enjoying the wilderness as long as I could walk. I have had some amazing adventures out here in the gorgeous San Bernardino Mountains over the years. As a alpine adventure enabler who is passionate about the wilderness, I love to share my knowledge of our vast trail system with vacationers who also love the great outdoors. Looking to book a hiking excursion? Email me at Hungrymountaineer@gmail.com for the best locals-only hikes available in this mountain wilderness. I am passionate about finding my balance in life – healthy living, great food, outdoor fitness, traveling adventures, working hard and my unbridled love for racehorses and naturally, gambling. When I’m not exploring news trails or betting on the ponies you can find me either coming up with healthy new recipes or blogging about the adventures my trail pup and I had in the wilderness this week. I have spent most of my life exploring what these mountains have to offer and locals would call me an expert and a backcountry Snack Sherpa. I know the best hiking and biking trails in these mountains and I have chronicled most of my hikes and adventures on this website. Please get in touch is you have any questions.
